Abstract

This Element demonstrates how and why the alignment method can advance measurement fairness in developmental science. It explains its application to multi-category items in an accessible way, offering sample code and demonstrating an R package that facilitates interpretation of such items' multiple thresholds. It features the implications for group mean differences when differences in the thresholds between categories are ignored because items are treated as continuous, using an example of intersectional groups defined by assigned sex and race/ethnicity. It demonstrates the interpretation of item-level partial non-invariance results and their implications for group-level differences and encourages substantive theorizing regarding measurement fairness.

Abstract

In the last 15 years, the field of developmental psychopathology has made enormous strides in uncovering the mechanisms and processes underlying the emergence of mental illness and dysfunction. Interdisciplinary in nature, the field has engaged the efforts of scientists with orientations ranging from developmental psychology to psychobiology. In Frontiers of Developmental Psychopathology, the editors have brought together some of the field's most respected researchers--including Jeanne Brooks-Gunn, Barbara A. Cornblatt, Richard A. Depue, and Marian Sigman--to discuss the latest research and to

Abstract

Images of children in Roman society abound: an infant's first bath, learning to walk, playing with pets and toys, going to school, and - all too often - dying prematurely. The child was prominent in private houses and public space in the teeming, cosmopolitan city of ancient Rome and other towns of Italy. Such a vivid picture does not recur until the twentieth century. This study builds on the dynamic work on the Roman family that has been developing in recent decades. Its focus on. the period between the first century BCE and the early third century CE provides a context for new work being do

Abstract

This book addresses the major forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in children's sport, including sexual, physical, and psychological violence and neglect. It reviews the historical, sociocultural, and political influences on violence towards children, and sets out future agendas for research and practice to eliminate GBV in sport. The book argues that for GBV to occur and be sustained over time, it must be facilitated by a system that enables this violence, protects the perpetrator, disables bystanders, silences the victims, and/or fails to provide a structure by which to address victims' or bystanders' concerns. Drawing on empirical research from across a range of disciplines, including sport sociology, sport psychology, developmental psychology, and coaching, and examining real life case studies of GBV in sport at all levels, the book makes a powerful case for radical change in our current systems of sport governance, safeguarding, and athlete welfare. This is important reading for any student, researcher, policy-maker, coach, welfare officer or counsellor with an interest in sport, gender studies, safeguarding, criminology, or sociology. Abstract

This comprehensive book provides detailed practical advice on the diagnosis and surgical management of congenital and acquired conditions in infants and children. Following the great success of the first edition, the new edition has been fully updated to reflect the major developments in the field of the past decade. Advances in prenatal diagnosis, imaging, anaesthesia and intensive care as well as the introduction of new surgical techniques, including minimally invasive surgery and robotic technology that have radically altered surgical conditions are now discussed in the book. In addition new chapters have been added on surgical safety in children, surgical problems of children with disabilities and surgical implications of HIV infection in children among others. This is a superbly structured and richly illustrated guide aimed at trainees, young pediatric surgeons and general surgeons with interest in pediatric surgery. The book also serves as a handy, quick and easy reference for those making decisions in daily practice. Pediatric Surgery, Diagnosis and Management features contributions by leading experts in pediatric surgery and pediatric urology who have unique experience in their respective fields.

Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive and updated review of the concepts, models, and interventions related to the process of adjustment to life course transitions. In times of transition, an individual is exposed to experiences that require them to assume new roles and exhibit updated behaviors. Regardless of the characteristics of these transitions, exposure to normative trajectories imposes on the person an intensive engagement in a process of (re-)adjustment. Sometimes this demand is beyond the scope of one's ability, motivation, or comprehension. Hence, some people might ineffectively perceive and/or react to the change and end up feeling unable to handle the change and inclined to escape the situation. A preventive intervention that either reduces the impact of possible risk factors or fosters possible protective factors would support the people in managing the transition. While the importance of prevention of maladjustment is repeatedly mentioned in the literature, this is the first-known book on how to prevent maladjustment. It examines how the sense of transition emerges, what adjustment means, the models that elaborate on how people manage in times of transition, what the antecedents of maladjustment are, and especially how maladjustment could be prevented. Out of these discussions, a new model, The Transitional Stress and Adjustment (TSA) Model, is suggested as a grand framework for paving a way forward to better prevent people's maladjustment to life course transitions. Prevention of Maladjustment to Life Course Transitions is a much-needed cornerstone in the future development within the prevention science framework. This book has interdisciplinary appeal for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in psychology, sociology, public health, social work, criminology, medicine, health sciences, public policy, economics, and education who consider prevention an important vehicle of intervention to promote health and wellbeing. Its focus on the topic of adjustment also would be of special interest to those who explore child and youth development.
